A tragic stampede at a temple in Goa has left six people dead and over 50 injured. The incident happened early Friday morning during the Lairai Jatra at the Shirgaon temple in Bicholim.
A Night of Devotion Turns Deadly
Every year, thousands of people gather at Shirgaon to worship Goddess Lairai, a form of Goddess Parvati. The festival includes rituals around a large fire. Many believe their wishes will come true if they sit near the flames. Some even walk on burning embers.
But this time, something went wrong.
What Caused the Stampede?
Around 4:00 am, panic spread through the crowd. People started running. In the rush, many were crushed or trampled.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said a possible electric shock may have caused the panic. But the exact reason is still being investigated.
Victims and Injuries
Six people died, including a 17-year-old boy. More than 50 others were injured, some seriously. They were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Doctors and emergency teams are working non-stop to help the injured.
What Was Done for Safety?
The government had made major security plans:
- Over 1,000 police officers were at the temple
- Drones watched the crowd from above
- A riot control van was on standby
- More than 300 traffic police were deployed
Still, the large crowd became too hard to manage.
Government Responds
Chief Minister Sawant visited the hospitals. He said extra doctors and ambulances were sent. A helpline (104) has been started for medical help.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his condolences:
“Saddened by the loss of lives due to a stampede in Shirgao, Goa. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon.”
