Gayaji, Bihar – Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that no leader should remain in power after being jailed, and stressed the need for a law mandating the removal of Prime Ministers and Chief Ministers if they are denied bail for 30 days after arrest.

Addressing a public meeting in Bihar’s Gayaji, PM Modi said that while ordinary government employees lose their jobs immediately after arrest, top leaders continue to hold power even from jail.

“If a driver, clerk, or peon is imprisoned for just 50 hours, they lose their job automatically. But a CM, Minister, or even a PM can still enjoy power from jail. How is this justice?” PM Modi questioned.

    Swipe at Arvind Kejriwal

In an apparent reference to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal—who was arrested on March 21, 2024 in the alleged liquor scam but continued functioning as CM from Tihar Jail—PM Modi said such practices mock the fight against corruption.

“Some time ago, we saw how files were being signed from jail and how government orders were issued from prison. If leaders have such an attitude, how can we fight corruption?” the PM remarked.

    NDA’s Anti-Corruption Bill

PM Modi said the NDA government has introduced a comprehensive anti-corruption law under which even the Prime Minister will be accountable.

“Today, no one should be above the law. This law is to ensure accountability and transparency at every level of governance,” he added.

The proposed legislation seeks to prevent arrested leaders from misusing their official powers while in jail, marking a major step in the NDA’s anti-corruption drive.
