Heavy rains trigger landslips and flash floods in Jammu; over 3,500 people shifted to relief camps
Jammu, August 27, 2025:
Heavy rains in Jammu and Kashmir have caused massive destruction, killing at least 13 people and forcing thousands to leave their homes.
The biggest tragedy happened on the Vaishno Devi route in Reasi district, where a landslip killed 11 pilgrims and injured 14 others on Tuesday afternoon. The yatra has been suspended until further notice.
Army’s Rescue Operations
The Indian Army has started large-scale rescue missions in flood-hit areas:
- In Jammu sector, trapped civilians and students were rescued from Garhi Garh, RS Pura, Sher-e-Kashmir University, and Swahanjana.
- In Mamun sector, Army helicopters lifted people from Kachle, Shahpur Kandi, Amli, Nad, and Zainpir Kukkar villages.
- 11 BSF personnel were also evacuated from Nikka BOP post.
So far, hundreds of civilians have been airlifted or shifted using boats.
3,500 People Evacuated in Jammu
The Jammu district administration, along with Army, NDRF, and SDRF, has evacuated more than 3,500 residents to safe camps.
Relief camps have been set up at several places, including the Youth Hostel in Jammu, with food, water, and medical help.
Rising Water in Punjab
The effect of Jammu rains has reached Punjab’s Pathankot, where water levels in rivers are rising. Authorities have identified safe shelters like Radha Swami Satsang Beas centre for people living in low-lying areas.
Travel and Communication Hit
- Highways: Jammu–Srinagar and Kishtwar–Doda highways closed.
- Trains: At least 18 trains, including the Vande Bharat Express (Katra–New Delhi), cancelled.
- Telecom: Mobile networks badly affected. The Department of Telecom has activated emergency roaming until September 2.
Govt Response
- CM Omar Abdullah called the situation “serious” and is flying to Jammu to monitor relief work.
- Union Home Minister Amit Shah confirmed that NDRF teams are reaching Katra to help in rescue.
- In Punjab, opposition leaders criticized CM Bhagwant Mann for being away during floods.
Weather Alert
The IMD has warned of very heavy rainfall for the next 40 hours in Jammu division.
Rivers Tawi, Chenab, and Basantar are already at alert levels.
All schools, colleges, and offices (except essential services) will remain closed until the situation improves. People are advised to stay away from rivers and flood-prone areas.
