BCCI Awaits Official Confirmation After Consulting With Government Authorities
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is staring at a possible suspension as tensions escalate between India and Pakistan. According to The Indian Express, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to make an official announcement soon, following consultations with the Indian government. The safety of players and support staff is currently the top priority.
Security Concerns Following Dharamsala Incident
The uncertainty around the IPL intensified after the Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals match in Dharamsala was abruptly halted due to a sudden blackout. The incident occurred during the first innings and led to the emergency evacuation of players, match officials, and broadcasting staff to their hotels.
Both teams, along with support crews, departed for Delhi early Friday morning via a special train. Many players, particularly overseas members and their families, were reportedly shaken by the incident.
Franchises Begin Evacuation Planning
In response, IPL franchises are proactively making arrangements to ensure the safe return of their players. At least three franchises have confirmed that chartered flights are being organized for evacuation, with the possibility of accommodating players from other teams if needed.
A franchise official stated, “We are waiting for BCCI’s final word. In the meantime, we’ve made arrangements to help anyone who wishes to leave.”
What’s Next for IPL 2025?
So far, 58 matches of the tournament have been completed, with 12 still remaining. The BCCI is considering several options, including:
- Pausing the tournament for a week and possibly resuming with double-headers to make up for lost time.
- Suspending the IPL indefinitely and scouting for a new window later in the year, although the packed international cricket calendar could complicate this plan.
The final decision is expected soon, and the cricketing world waits anxiously to see how the BCCI navigates this unprecedented situation.
