Rameswaram, April 6, 2025:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the much-anticipated new Pamban rail bridge, hailing it as an “engineering wonder” that beautifully blends cutting-edge technology with India’s rich tradition.
The newly constructed bridge, built over the Palk Strait, connects Rameswaram Island to Ramanathapuram on the Tamil Nadu mainland. With a total length of 2.08 km and constructed at a cost of ₹531 crore, this iconic structure stands as India’s first vertical lift sea bridge.
Addressing the event, Prime Minister Modi said, “This bridge is not just a marvel of modern engineering, but a symbol of India’s progress and dedication to strengthening connectivity in every corner of the country.”
The vertical lift mechanism allows the central section of the bridge to be raised, enabling ships and marine vessels to pass beneath—ensuring seamless integration of rail and maritime traffic.
Replacing the historic 1914 bridge, the new structure is designed to accommodate heavier trains at higher speeds, promising improved rail connectivity and economic growth for the region. It also incorporates modern safety features and automated systems, making it a milestone in Indian rail infrastructure.
The inauguration marks a significant moment in India’s infrastructure journey, positioning the Pamban rail bridge as both a logistical lifeline and a testament to national engineering excellence.
