A multi-storey building collapsed in the Mustafabad area of Delhi in the early hours of Saturday, following intense rainfall and thunderstorms that hit several parts of the city on Friday. Officials fear that many people are trapped under the debris.
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Delhi Police rushed to the spot and have initiated a rescue operation. Local residents have also gathered at the scene, assisting in the relief efforts.
Delhi experienced a sudden change in weather on Friday, with heavy downpours and strong winds causing waterlogging and structural damage across the city. Mustafabad, being a densely populated locality, was significantly affected.
Similar Incident Last Week
In a related incident last week, one person died and two others were injured after a wall from a six-storey under-construction building collapsed near the Madhu Vihar police station during a dust storm.
According to Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Vineet Kumar, “Around 7 pm, we received a PCR call. Upon reaching the location, we found that the wall of a six-floor under-construction building had collapsed due to the dust storm. One person was found dead, and two were taken to the hospital with injuries.”
These back-to-back incidents have raised serious concerns about building safety standards and the urgent need for infrastructure checks, especially during unpredictable weather conditions.
